It’s time for another monthly check-in on NIH funding.
Last month we mentioned how Congress had rejected proposed cuts to NIH funding, but the OMB was then holding it up more. The latest headlines just breaking today, 9th April, are that the administration will not continue the court fight to cap indirect costs (facilities and administrative) at 15% (Statnews, paywall). While this would not have directly impacted our science sales and marketing community typically selling equipment and consumables to scientists, it could be a sign that the fight around NIH funding in general is being left as other issues take priority for the white house.
This month we have started to see more money flow, with March 2026 standing at 6.87% higher than this time in March 2025.
Figure 1: NIH Funding Awarded by Month Jan 2024 to Mar 2026
All 3 months of 2026 so far have seen higher value of funding awarded vs the same point last year – January was up 25.8%, February up 129.29%, and March up 6.87%.
If we look at the fiscal year to date, FY26 (October 2025 through to March 2026), it is up 2.16% overall vs the same point in FY25
Figure 2: Change in NIH Funding Each Month for FY25 vs FY26 to date
Although October and November were down vs the year prior, every other month so far has seen an increase.
Figure 3: Cumulative NIH Funding Delta FY25 vs FY26 to date
Overall these differences add up, putting the fiscal year to date at +$655m vs the same point in FY25.
