Matthew lives in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland, and joined SciLeads this year in the newly created role of UX/UI Designer. We recently asked him a few questions about joining SciLeads:
What did you do before joining SciLeads?
Before joining SciLeads I worked as a UX designer for a small design agency. Prior to that I graduated from Ulster University Belfast School of Art with a degree in Interaction Design.
How did you find the interview process at SciLeads?
The Interview process was great! Every step was outlined from the start which made it easy to know where I was in the process. Throughout each step I was kept in contact with and told what was happening next. It kept me engaged and built confidence that they valued my time as much as their own.
What is a typical day like as a UI/UX Designer?
A typical day in the life as a UI/UX designer involves a mix of user interface design work, collaboration, and problem-solving. I often start by reviewing messages, project updates, and participating in meetings to align with product managers. I then spend this time conducting user research, analysing feedback, or brainstorming solutions through low-fidelity wireframes.
I then move into creating prototypes and refining designs using Figma. Collaborating closely with developers to ensure my designs are feasible. This is often followed by reviewing or testing designs for usability and alignment with brand and accessibility standards, before presenting work to stakeholders, gathering feedback, and iterating on designs.
What is the most rewarding part of your job as a UI/UX designer at SciLeads?
The most rewarding part of my job is hearing positive feedback from customers. Having the ability to create solutions that make complex tasks easier and enhance the overall user experience. Knowing that the changes we make to the product are affecting real people and making their lives easier. As well as being able to bridges the gap between user needs and business goals, while contributing to accessible and inclusive design to make the platform easier for everyone.
How has the flexible work environment at SciLeads helped you?
Flexible working is great! It saves me from commuting, so I can focus more on work during the day and have more time to spend with friends and family in the evening. It also gives me the opportunity to go for a walk in the middle of the day. Unless it’s raining (which it normally is!).
What is your favourite thing about working at SciLeads so far?
My favourite thing about working at SciLeads is the supportive and collaborative team culture. In my role I get to work across lots of different areas of the business. Everyone is approachable and genuinely committed to helping each other succeed, as well as what is best for SciLeads. This helps me feel valued and keeps me motivated to do my best work.
