Athena lives in Toronto and joined SciLeads in 2024 as a Sales Development Representative. Here she shares her insight into life at SciLeads and her favourite employee benefit.
What did you do before joining SciLeads?
Before joining SciLeads I was a Business Development Representative at a medical tech company.
How did you find the interview process at SciLeads?
The interview process was really transparent, quick and straightforward.
What does a typical day look like for you as an SDR at SciLeads?
My typical day starts at 8am and ends at 5pm so I can have half days on Friday! I usually prospect new customers to call for the first half of my morning, then cold call Europe until lunch. Over lunch I’ll often go rock climbing or to a Pilates class, and then after lunch I call North America and do LinkedIn outreach.
What is your favourite thing about working at SciLeads so far?
SciLeads understands work-life balance, and that’s one of my favourite aspects about the job because it keeps me from getting burnt out. Whether that is allowing me to decide what hours I work in a day or to work remotely in another country or city, the company is always very accommodating. Visiting my parents in Ottawa, working out and going to appointments are never things that I have to worry about fitting into my calendar as with prior jobs.
Is there a SciLeads perk or benefit that’s made a meaningful difference to you?
Similar to my last point, I love the flexibility SciLeads provides. I spent this winter living in Chile and was so much more motivated to work living in eternal summer! It really feels like the company trusts its employees and their work ethic. I’ve also been using the development allowance to learn Spanish!
What skills have you gained or strengthened since starting as an SDR?
Since being an SDR here I’ve greatly improved on listening back to my calls and seeing where I went wrong. Not every call is perfect and its really easy to just say “oh the prospect didn’t want the product” or “they were busy so I should call them later”. Over the past year, I’ve gotten a lot better at analyzing those calls and reflecting on problems like tone, pacing, and word choice, which has resulted in me consistently hitting target!
What advice would you give someone wanting to join and grow their career at SciLeads?
Come with an open mind and take any advice you get and try to implement it ASAP. It can feel awkward to handle objection on calls because those aren’t everyday conversations. You may mess up a few calls but it starts to feel more organic with time.
