Q&A with Charlene Gormley – Financial Assistant

Charlene lives in Derry, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, and joined SciLeads this year as a Financial Assistant. We recently asked her a few questions about joining SciLeads:

What did you do before joining SciLeads?

I worked as a Finance Officer for 5 years and managed a small team in a not-for-profit organisation. It was a fast paced environment and one where I was able to build upon my finance skills whilst studying and sitting exams for my CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) qualification.

How did you find the interview process at SciLeads?

The process was clear from the outset. I was unfamiliar with Linkedin, where I had applied for the role, but it was straight forward, and I was kept informed throughout the various stages. I’ve sat on both sides of an interview panel in the past, but online was a first for me! Nonetheless, I thought it was a great way of interviewing as you aren’t worrying about getting there, and there was no waiting around as everything was like clockwork, so you are more at ease.

What is a typical day like as a Financial Assistant?

I’m not sure if there is a typical day! There is a lot of reporting particularly at month-end which takes up quite a bit of time in the month, along with running the payroll. Ensuring that outstanding invoices are paid, and regulatory compliance is carried out – this is why I am always chasing for those missing invoices and receipts!

What is the most rewarding part of your job as a UI/UX designer at SciLeads?

I would say it would be the learning opportunities it provides. When I’ve nailed down a certain task or made a difference to a process for the better, it is very rewarding for me. Every challenge allows me to grow professionally and personally.

How has the flexible work environment at SciLeads helped you?

The flexible work environment has been a game changer. Having 2 children at primary school with busy lifestyles, I’ve been able to achieve a great work-life balance without having to prioritise one over the other. It’s also particularly great in the bad weather when there is no commute to work!

What is your favourite thing about working at SciLeads so far?

The company culture – everyone is treated as an individual.
